General Description of the Course: This course includes a brief account of Imam Muslim’s life and an overview of his book "Sahih Muslim", along with explanations of selected Ahadith from various chapters, including: Faith, Clothing and Adornment, Poetry, Virtues of the Sahabah (radiyAllahu anhum), Heart-Softeners, and Repentance.
Main Objective of the Course: To introduce the student to Imam Muslim and his book "Sahih Muslim", with an explanation of selected Ahadith from it.
Learning Outcomes of the Course: Upon successful completion of this course a student will be able to:
1- Describe Imam Muslim, his book "Sahih Muslim", and the methodology that he followed in his book and the conditions that he adhered to.
2- Describe the most significant scholarly contributions to the book "Sahih Muslim", including works such as explanations, summaries and other efforts.
3- Read the selected Ahadith correctly and clarify the meanings of the uncommon words in them.
4- Explain some of the issues and rulings related to the chapters of faith, clothing and adornment, poetry, virtues of the Sahabah (radiyAllahu anhum), heart-softeners, and repentance.
5- Analyze Imam Muslim’s arrangement of Ahadith and chains of transmission in his book.
6- Apply the principles of the science of Hadith (Mustalah al-Hadith) and criticism/appraisal of narrators (al-Jarh wat-Tadil) to the selected Ahadith according to the guidelines of the experts in this field with respect to authentic Ahadith.
7- Compare the methodology of Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim in selecting their Ahadith and narrators.
8- Extract the subtleties of chains of transmission.
9- Derive rulings and issues from the Hadith.
Scope and Syllabus: Topics covered in the syllabus may include, but are not limited to:
Firstly: A Biography of Imam Muslim: his name, lineage and ascription, birth and upbringing, travels in search of Hadith, most famous teachers, most illustrious students, status and position, praise of the scholars upon him, rank in the science of al-Jarh wat-Tadil, creed and belief, authorship and works, and death.
Secondly: A Study of the book "Sahih Muslim": the complete name of the book, reason behind its compilation, methodology of the author in it, types of Ahadith it includes, number of Ahadith it contains, rank amongst the six books of Hadith, various narrators, services of later scholars to it from al-Mukhtasarat (summaries), al-Mustakhrajat, and ash-Shuruh (explanations).
Thirdly: Reading and explanation of 120 Ahadith from "Sahih Muslim" from the following chapters:
1- The Book of Faith (al-Iman) [39 Ahadith].
2- The Book of Clothing and Adornment (al-Libas waz-Zinah) [32 Ahadith].
3- The Book of Poetry (ash-Shi'r) [3 Ahadith].
4- The Book of the Virtues of the Sahabah (radiyAllahu anhum) (Fadail as-Sahabah) [37 Ahadith].
5- The Book of Heart-Softeners (ar-Riqaq) [3 Ahadith].
6- The Book of Repentance (at-Tawbah) [6 Ahadith].
